gabion

What Is A Gabion?

Gabions (from Italian gabbione meaning “big cage”; from Italian gabbia and Latin cavea meaning “cage”) are cages, cylinders, or boxes filled with soil or sand that are used in civil engineering, road building, and military application. For erosion control caged riprap is used. For dams or foundation construction, cylindrical metal structures are used. In a military context, earth or sand-filled Gabions are used to protect artillery crews.

Civil engineering: The most common civil engineering use is to stabilize shore against erosion. Other uses include retaining walls, temporary floodwalls, to filter silt from runoff, for small or temporary/permanent dams, river training, channel lining. They may be used to direct the force of a flow of flood water around a vulnerable structure. Gabions are also used as fish barriers on small streams.

Gabion baskets have some advantages over loose riprap because of their modularity and ability to be stacked in various shapes. They also have advantages over more rigid structures because they can conform to ground movement, dissipate energy from flowing water and drain freely. Their strength and effectiveness may increase with time in some cases, as silt and vegetation fill the interstitial voids and reinforce the structure. They are sometimes used to keep stones which may fall from a cutting or cliff from endangering traffic on a thoroughfare.

Gabions have also been used in building, as in the Dominus Winery in Napa Valley, California. The exterior is formed by modular wire mesh Gabions containing locally quarried stone; this construction creates an environment of moderate temperatures within the building.

Military use: In the medieval era, Gabions were round cages with open tops and bottoms, made from wickerwork and filled with earth for use as military fortifications. These early military Gabions were used to protect field artillery gunners. The wickerwork cylinders were light and could be carried relatively conveniently in the ammunition train, particularly if they were made in several diameters to fit one in another. At the site of use in the field, they could be stood on end, staked in position, and filled with soil to form an effective wall around the gun. Today, Gabions are often used to protect forward operating bases.

Shake up Froc

Published: 30/11/2011 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: News

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra slipped through the legislative version of a back door when Parliament took up the flood crisis too briefly on Sunday and Monday. Because of a matter of parliamentary procedure, the opposition Democrat Party was unable to put the premier’s name on the censure motion.

In the event, there never was doubt about the outcome. The Pheu Thai Party and its allies mustered votes to beat the censure attempt. The numbers stated that 273 government and coalition MPs have high confidence in the handling of the flood disaster, while 188 do not.

The debate, which lasted barely more than a day, centred on Justice Minister Pracha Promnok and his Flood Relief Operations Command. And rightly so. To say the Froc was “controversial” during the past couple of months would be a vast understatement. As defenders during the censure debate noted, Froc did distribute some goods to some flood victims, some of the time. But the Froc’s operations were often flawed and now that the main crisis is over and the floods are receding, the flood relief body deserves a close, careful examination.

For a body that was designed to lead the national fight against floods, the Froc made terrible blunders in the eyes of the country. Its very location became the butt of jokes. So-called experts told the Froc that Don Mueang Airport would be a good location as a base: big, pretty quiet,Democrats unveil price list for Froc’s boats-hesco bastion, lots of work space,Gabion Mattress, able to fly anywhere by helicopter or airplane, and enormous storage room for aid. The experts were wrong, and it was the Froc that became the butt of flood jokes and derision even before its major aid and rehabilitation efforts got going.

Arguably, being flooded out of the flood headquarters was remarkably bad luck. It didn’t help when the second Froc headquarters on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road also flooded. The sight of an anti-flood aid agency perched in the midst of the floods hardly inspired confidence.

Democrat critics scored several strong points in their attacks on Pol Gen Pracha and the Froc. They deserve a follow-up in the court of public disclosure. The charges of corruption within Froc are particularly disturbing. The accusation that any politician or public official pocketed even one satang of the public’s donations must be carefully investigated.

Generally, the public agrees with the charge by Democrat MPs that the anti-flood agency is “a mess”. At the moment, Pol Gen Pracha is a very unpopular person, because he did a poor job managing Froc and its public communications. Had a random group of 500 citizens voted instead of disciplined members of parliament, Pol Gen Pracha would likely have lost the censure debate.

Prime Minister Yingluck, who played no role in the defence of Froc and her government, insists everyone should be giving moral support to those who fight the floods and organise aid. However, it is possible to do this and still examine the problems. It remains questionable whether the head of Froc has earned the confidence of the nation. After the vote on Monday, the prime minister said a major reshuffle is not likely. But it is always a good time to make adjustments. The performance of the Froc could be much better, and Ms Yingluck must bear this in mind in coming days.

Information

The QIAOSHI’s Military Barriers or Hesco Bastions is a modern gabion used for flood control and military fortification. It is made of a collapsible wire mesh container and heavy duty fabric liner,钢格板, and used as a temporary to semi-permanent dike or barrier against blast or small-arms. One of the less heralded life- and labor-saving devices of war, it is used on nearly every United States Military base in Iraq as well as on NATO bases in Afghanistan.

Originally designed for use on beaches and marshes for erosion and flood control, the Hesco Bastion quickly became a popular security device in the 1990s.

Assembly
Assembling the Hesco Bastion entails unfolding it and (if available) using a front end loader to fill it with sand, dirt or gravel. The placement of the barrier is generally very similar to the placement of a sandbag barrier or earth berm except that room must generally be allowed for the equipment used to fill the barrier. The main advantage of Military Barrier, strongly contributing to their popularity with troops and flood fighters, is the quick and easy setup. Previously,Operations could resume within 45 days in flooded industrial estates-hesco bastion, people had to fill sandbags,Estate operators erect flood dykes against future deluges-hesco,加筋格宾, a slow undertaking, with one worker filling about 20 sandbags per hour. Workers using Military Barrier and a front end loader can do ten times the work of those using sandbags.
The Hesco Barrier come in a variety of sizes. Most of the barriers can also be stacked, and they are shipped collapsed in compact sets. Example dimensions of typical configurations are 46″ x 36″ x 32 (1.4m x 1.1m x 9.8m) to 7 x 5 x 100 (2.1m x 1.5m x 30m).
A new system of Hesco Bastion developed specially for military use is deployed from a container, which is dragged along the line of ground where the barrier is to be formed, unfolding up to several hundred meters of barrier in minutes, ready for filling with soil by a backhoe.

Protection
Filled with sand, 60 centimetres (24 inches) of barrier thickness will stop rifle bullets and shell fragments. It takes 1.5 metres (five feet) of thickness to prevent penetration by a rocket propelled grenade round. Approximately 1.2 metres (four feet) of thickness provides protection against most car bombs.

Flood-weary residents vent fury
Road blockade group clashes with motorists

Hundreds of flood-devastated residents in Pathum Thani yesterday clashed with motorists during the Din Daeng-Don Muang tollway blockade to pressure the government to accelerate assistance and the drainage of deep floodwater.

Residents of swamped communities in Pathum Thani clash with motorists during the blockade of the Din Daeng-Don Muang tollway in front of Zeer Rangsit department store yesterday. The flood victims set up a roadblock to demand the government speed up flood relief operations after being hard hit by deep floodwaters for about a month. PATTANAPONG HIRUNARD

The residents from several flooded communities in Rangsit and Lam Luk Ka areas, led by former election candidate Kiattisak Songsaeng, set up a blockade on the entrance of the inbound tollway in front of Zeer Rangsit department store at about noon.

The residents demanded the government’s Flood Relief Operations Command (Froc) accelerate drainage of floodwaters which had affected their livelihoods for a month.

The road closure caused heavy congestion, prompting motorists to negotiate with the protesters. However, the talks failed and both sides clashed at about 2pm before police from Vibhavadi station and Pathum Thani intervened.

Almost simultaneously, nearly a thousand residents in Bangkok’s Sai Mai and Don Muang areas yesterday dismantled a massive sandbag dyke at Don Muang’s Directorate of Air Operations Control intersection on Phahon Yothin Road.

An angry motorist confronts protesters after her car was badly damaged during clashes near the Din Daeng-Don Muang tollway yesterday. PATTANAPONG HIRUNARD

The villagers, equipped with knives and sharp objects, waited for Froc representatives to negotiate. They had been asking the Froc to widen a drainage gap. However, they decided to remove the barrier after talks with Pol Maj Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapat, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 2, failed.

After the flood barrier was removed, large amounts of water rushed towards Saphan Mai area.

Deputy city clerk Chumphol Sampaopol yesterday said the removal of the floodwall on Phahon Yothin Road would slow down the drainage resulting in prolonged hardship.

He said some areas could be affected as the water in Khlong Mon 40 could rise by 1cm to 2cm after the barrier was dismantled.

“Even though the city’s drainage system is working efficiently,不锈钢生丝, the removal of the floodwall could slow down the drainage,” he said.

“Some areas such as Lat Phrao, Kasetsart intersection may take another four to five days to dry out.” He said that the city has asked the Royal Irrigation Department to install more water pumps south of Khlong Rangsit to accelerate drainage of water in the Don Muang area.

More protests are imminent as Arthit Ourairat,Democrats unveil price list for Froc’s boats-hesco, rector of Rangsit University and a former House speaker, is urging residents in Pathum Thani to step up pressure on the Froc. Rangsit University is situated in the heavily flooded Muang Ake housing estate, which lies north of Don Muang.

On his Facebook wall, Dr Arthit suggested blocking Vibhavadi Road and Don Muang tollway.

“If the authorities do not take action I suggest that we take a step. That is to close down in-bound and out-bound Vibhavadi road and Don Muang tollway,” Dr Arthit said.

“And I’m asking Don Muang people to join us. We are in the same boat.”

He said the floodwater may recede, but the level is still high in many areas.

However, he was opposed to a proposal that the floodwater be drained via the western side, saying it would affect Khlong Prapa,Chain Fence, which is a resource for tap water production.

Dr Arthit yesterday sent a letter to Froc director Pracha Promnok and Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra, asking them to accelerate drainage of the floodwaters.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday pleaded with Bangkok residents to let some floodwaters flow into the area to ease the hardship of others.

“The flood barriers could just slow down the run-off into the city. The areas which have dried out should open the way for the water to drain into the sea,” she said.

She said she had asked the Froc and City Hall to work together to drain the water and jointly negotiate with the people in the process.

“If we look at the big picture and try to understand the nature of water,Thailand tries to help companies as floods spread-razor barbed wire, that is the best solution,” she said.

“Holding off water is never a solution. Some areas have to let water flow past,” Ms Yingluck added.

Anond Snidvongs, the Froc’s water management adviser, said a meeting among Bangkok and six neighbouring provinces’ governors,防洪墙-拦河坝, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit, will be held today to find solutions to halt the spreading conflicts.

t post-The Ultimate Lock Picker Hacks Pentagon, Beats Corporate Security for Fun and Profit-Wire Mes

Our fellow diners begin to stare. Tobias doesn’t notice and wouldn’t care anyway. He’s as rumpled and wild as a nerdy grizzly bear. His place mat is covered in diagrams and sketched floor plans and scribbled arrows. His laugh fits him like a tinfoil hat. It goes on for a solid 20 seconds.

Marc Weber Tobias can pick, crack, or bump any lock. Now he wants to teach the world how to break into military facilities and corporate headquarters.
Illustration: Tetsuya Nagato

But to Tobias, pissing off The Man isn’t the point, not entirely. Nor is it, entirely, to make himself famous or rich—not that he’s allergic to either outcome. The point, waratah fence post, he says, is to “make shit better.” Tobias thinks of himself as a humble public servant. When he attacks the Kryptonite bike lock or the Club (or those in-room safes at Holiday Inn or Caesars Palace),fence post-FBI looks into third shooting at a military facility in two weeks – CNN-Wire Mesh, he’s not a bad guy—he’s just Ralph Nader with a slim jim, protecting consumers by exposing locks, safes, and security systems that aren’t actually locked, safe, or secure. At least, not from people like him.

The problem, if you’re a safe company or a lock maker, is that Tobias makes it all public through hacker confabs, posts on his Security.org site, and tech blogs like Engadget. He views this glasnost as a public service. Others see a hacker how-to that makes The Anarchist Cookbook read like Betty Crocker. And where Tobias sees a splendid expression of First Amendment rights, locksmiths and security companies see a criminal finishing school. Tobias isn’t just exposing problems, they say. He is the problem.

Some Marc Weber Tobias problems rattle companies. Others end as consulting contracts or dropped lawsuits or forcibly improved design. But all Tobias problems,Gabion Mattress-Abortion and Military Facilities The Effect of the Burris Amendment in the Departme, like all hacker stories, start with a nerdy kid in a basement workshop, taking things apart.

Lock-breaking is equal parts art and science. So is the ability to royally piss people off. Tobias is a veritable da Vinci at both endeavors. His Web site’s streaming video of prepubescent kids gleefully opening gun locks has won him no points with mothers or locksmiths, and his ideas about how to smuggle liquid explosive reagents onto commercial airlines spookily presaged the Transportation Security Administration’s prohibitions against carry-on liquids. Over the past 20 years, Tobias has been threatened by casinos, banned from hotel chains, and bullied by legions of corporate lawyers. And enjoyed every minute of it.

We’ve covered key card hotel locks over seafood, in-room credit card safes over sandwiches. While we ate a decent steak dinner, Tobias used the house crayons to diagram one of the largest jewel robberies in history; over dessert, he showed me how a person less honest than himself would pull the heist again.

But forget bike locks and hotel room safes: These days, Tobias is attacking the lock famous for protecting places like military installations and the homes of American presidents and British royals.

Thinking like a criminal is Tobias’ idea of fun. It makes him laugh. It has also made him money and earned him a reputation as something of the Rain Man of lock-breaking. Even if you’ve never heard of Tobias, you may know his work: He’s the guy who figured out how to steal your bike, unlock your front door, crack your gun lock, gabion, blow up your airplane, and hijack your mail. Marc Weber Tobias has a name for the headache he inflicts on his targets: the Marc Weber Tobias problem.

Between stabs at his salad, Tobias hands me his latest idea of fun: nearly 300 pages of self-published hacker-porn detailing his attack on the allegedly uncrackable Medeco high-security lock. “Trust me, this will cause a goddamned riot!” he says, dabbing at tears of joy with a paper napkin. “Oh yeah, this is way, way bigger than the liquid explosives thing!” And he’s right, it is bigger—and with way, way bigger consequences.

Like many exceedingly bright people, Tobias has the exhausted air of a know-it-all. Over dozens of dinners, he has walked me through how to pick simple locks (“Uh, is there something wrong with your hands?”) and bypass combination dials (“A brain-damaged monkey could do it faster”). He has described how to outwit security technologies like motion detectors (“Duh”), face-recognition software (“It’s stupid, even if you think about it!”), fingerprint scans (“What child came up with that?”), and heat sensors (“You can get this one—maybe”).

Tobias is laughing. And laughing. The effect is disconcerting. It’s a bwa-ha-ha kind of evil mastermind laugh—appropriate if you’ve just sacked Constantinople, checkmated Deep Blue, or handed Superman a Dixie cup of kryptonite Kool-Aid,t post, but downright scary in a midtown Manhattan restaurant during the early-bird special.

But Tobias isn’t crazy. Far from it. He’s a professional lock breaker, gabion box-Jobs for Civilians at US Military Facilities-Wire Mesh, a man obsessively—perhaps compulsively—dedicated to cracking physical security systems. He doesn’t play games,Stone Cage, he rarely sees movies, he doesn’t attend to plants or pets or, currently, a girlfriend. Tobias hacks locks. Then he teaches the public how to hack them, too.
