Riverbank Repair After Years of Damage
One section may still be intact.
Another may have lost stone.
A third may already show movement beneath the surface.
Welshmill in Frome provides a current example. Its riverbank revetment was built in 1971, but decades of river flows and natural ageing have damaged parts of the stone surface. The Environment Agency's 2026 repair project includes stone pitching repairs, permanent support piles and stabilization of erosion-affected areas.
That kind of work makes localized reinforcement particularly relevant.
Repairing the Section
Welded wire netting can be used around selected sections where additional stone confinement or surface reinforcement is required.
The approach is relatively straightforward:
Existing bank → prepare damaged area → install welded mesh → place suitable stone → secure the protection layer.
For riverbank repair, our welded wire netting can be supplied with:
·Galvanized steel wire for outdoor corrosion resistance;
·PVC-coated wire where additional coating protection is required;
·1–4 inch mesh openings to suit different stone sizes;
·2–8 mm wire diameters for different structural requirements.
Rolls can also be produced in project-specific dimensions, making them suitable for sections that vary in width or profile.
The material can be selected according to the damaged zone rather than forcing every part of the bank into one identical configuration.
What Welshmill's Repair Work Brings Into Focus
The Welshmill project is scheduled around an existing public environment, with temporary footpath and traffic management required during construction.
That is typical of many riverbank repair projects: the engineering work happens alongside roads, paths, buildings or other infrastructure that must remain protected and accessible.
A repair material therefore needs to make sense on the site as it exists—not only on a drawing.
For projects involving damaged stonework, localized erosion or reinforcement of an existing riverbank, welded wire netting for riverbank repair offers contractors another way to rebuild the protective layer while working with the bank's existing conditions.
